In 2018 over 150 volunteers travelled to Belarus to part-take in CARE Camps in both Cherven and Gorodishche Orphanages. It was one of our busiest years to date and the momentum of the past few years is showing no signs of letting up with 2019 shaping up to be yet another very busy year for Burren Chernobyl Project. CARE camps is our largest volunteer programme at the moment. Realising and understanding the basic human needs of interaction, camaraderie, sensory stimulation, conversation, all the things we take for granted and taking action has brought the quality of life of these children forward leaps and bounds. |
Summer 2019, like the last few summers is already lining up to be another very busy few months of volunteers travelling to Belarus. However each year our volunteer programme is growing with more and more volunteers travelling in spring and autumn. This year is no different, we've already had three groups travel in the past two months spending time with the children and young people in both Gorodishche and Cherven Orphanages.
Most recently, Bridget Noonan and Deirdre Delaney from Laois have just returned from Belarus having spent this past week in Gorodishche. Visiting the children outside of summer months is a very different experience as often the weather can be cold and activities are confined to indoors. This didn't stop our volunteers from having a fun filled, jam-packed week. From spending quality time in all the groups to organising different activities there was fun for all and smiles all round. The older girls were delighted to showcase some of their beautiful embroidery work which our volunteers were very impressed with!

It's exciting for all the residents when the Irish come to visit before the summer but it's particularly nice for those who have birthdays outside of the regular volunteer months as celebrating their birthday is made extra special when they have Irish friends there to make a fuss with presents and a party!
Well done and thank you to our volunteers for creating such special memories for our dear friends. Memories they will cherish. <3
