Annual 6k/10k Walk

BCP are holding their annual 6k/10k walk in Liscannor next Sunday, April 29^th. The walk begins at 1pm. Sponsorship cards are available by phoning the office on 065 – 7071130 or contacting us at office@burrenchernobyl.ie. All proceeds go directly to Belarus in BCP supported projects and orphanages. For last minute walkers donations on the day are also greatly appreciated.

Truck of Humanitarian Aid on route to Belarus

Burren Chernobyl Project has just sent another 45 foot truck of Humanitarian Aid to Belarus. Thanks to all those who contributed clothes, shoes, bedding and other much needed items. The container of goods is due to arrive in Minsk on April 24^th just before the anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy on 26^th. The goods are received in Minsk by the local Charity Dobra Tut which is the Belarusian wing of Burren Chernobyl. This ensures that all goods go exactly where they are needed and there is complete control from packing in Ennistymon until distribution in the orphanages in Belarus. There has been an increase in the requests from the orphanages this year due to the fall in the value of the local currency. Burren Chernobyl Project is currently supporting Cherven and Gorodishche Children’s Orphanages as well as several adult orphanages and homes for the elderly. Many thanks again to all who donated, to all those who helped pack and to everyone who came along to load the truck. Much appreciated.

Bábushkas & Bábochkas Exhibition

Tessa O'Connor, a long standing Burren Chernobyl volunteer and designer of our logo, studied Fine Art Printmaking in LSAD and graduated in 2009. She has been living and working in Russia and Belarus for the past year. This work draws on the style of Russian iconography and folk art from the 17th and 18th centuries that she was able to experience first hand in the archives and museums of St Petersburg and the villages of Belarus. The body of work is in lino prints and stained glass.

"My work is a testament to the people that I have met in the orphanages and adult institutions in Belarus and the caring friendships between them. These people are often pushed to the shadows of the country. In the works 'Bábushkas & Bábochkas' I am attempting to depict them in the place of respect that I feel they deserve. They have a warmth and strength that amazes me."

The exhibition is opening on Friday, 21 October in the Ennistymon Courthouse gallery in the red couch space upstairs.

Medical Volunteers Needed!

Burren Chernobyl Project requires both a senior physiotherapist and occupational therapist for a medical trip to Belarus from October 30th-November 6th, 2011. Volunteer therapists will need to have at least three years graduate experience, experience in paediatrics and complex postural management. Closing date for applications is Wednesday, 5th October. Email medical@burrenchernobyl.ie for more information.

Well the rain stopped and the clouds parted (only slightly) and a great send off was given to Pat Conway and friends for his 39th Annual Liscannor Bay Swim.

Lots of money was raised all of which goes to vital projects in Belarus supported by BCP. Thanks to everyone involved...
